Eco-Workshop No. 4: The Cardboard Pencil Cup

The new school year is well under way. Now it’s time to organize your little scholars’ study area. First step: find a quiet, well-lit spot to create a space that is conducive to concentration. Once you have set up the desk, personalize the work area to make homework and study time more enjoyable! Get the whole family involved in decorating—especially the ones who will be using the area so it feels even more like their own space. We suggest making an original pencil holder using empty toilet paper rolls. Here’s how:

MATERIALS:
  • Newspaper/magazine clippings
  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • Glue stick
  • Glue gun
  • Polystyrene food tray
  • Black pencil
  • Ruler
  • Exacto knife

STEP 1

Cut the toilet paper rolls to various lengths.

STEP 2

Draw outlines on the selected visuals (newspaper or magazine clippings, etc.) and cut them out to fit around the outside of the paper rolls.

STEP 3

Cover the back of the visuals and the outside of the rolls with glue. Place the images on the rolls, then roll them to make sure the paper sticks.

STEP 4

Draw circles the same size as the rolls’ openings on the polystyrene tray. Cut the circles out using the exacto knife.

STEP 5

Insert one circle into each roll.

STEP 6

Use the glue gun to stick the rolls together. Drop the pencils in!
