Recognizing our top sustainable suppliers

Alain Lemaire, Cascades' President and CEO, Stéphane Dubé, Cascades' Corporate Procurement Manager and Mario Plourde, Cascades' Chief Operating Officer with the winners.

At Cascades’ annual meeting of plant managers on February 5, we awarded the 2012 Sustainable Supplier Award to Xerium Technologies.

This is the fourth time that this award has been presented to a supplier that contributes to improving our sustainable development performance. In 2009, we committed to a responsible procurement strategy, which was the genesis of the contest. We love working with companies that share our values and are always innovating. We’ve found that it’s a great way to encourage suppliers to improve their practices!

A growing interest

Suppliers of chemical products, goods and services are invited to submit an application featuring a project undertaken by one or more of our units during the year. This project must have had a positive impact on our environmental (e.g., energy, water, raw materials, transport), social (e.g., health and safety) and economic performance. A jury evaluates the quality of each application.

Every year, this contest attracts a greater number of suppliers. It appears that our efforts to influence the entire supply chain to adopt sustainable practices have been successful!

How did Xerium Technologies stand out from the crowd?

Xerium’s specialty is paper machine clothing and roll technology, and finding innovative ways to improve the environmental performance of our machines is one of our priorities. Why? Well, for companies manufacturing commodity products, the manufacturing stage carries some of the most significant environmental impacts.

Without going into technical details, Xerium’s new intelligent roll technology has several allowed Cascades Tissue Group plants in North America to reap substantial environmental (energy and water use reduction) and economic (cost reduction) benefits. In addition, Xerium’s application clearly demonstrated the project’s positive impact on our sustainable development performance.

Looking ahead

Through this contest, we hope to inspire other suppliers to embrace sustainable development. As a major player in our field, we can have a positive influence on our partners. From the perspective of responsible sourcing, doing business with suppliers that share our company’s core values is imperative. That’s why we contracted a third party to undertake an evaluation of our suppliers throughout 2012. Currently, we are finalizing our Sustainable Procurement Policy, an important step toward establishing a clear framework for these initiatives.

Future posts will be covering these topics, so stay tuned!
