Joseph Boachie, a Cascader dedicated to young Ghanaian Canadians

Joseph Boachie is a model of success for the young people in his community.

Remember the blog post about our two “Socio-Heroes” Contest winners? Cheryl Hicks  and Johanne Fournier were our winners in the United States and Québec. Now, we’d like to introduce our third Socio-Hero, this time from English Canada: Joseph Boachie. This Cascader is a model of success for the young people around him. There were many candidates, but this process engineer at Norampac – Mississauga came out on top.

His initiatives contribute to the healthy development of young Ghanaian Canadians in his community. Joseph devotes much of his time to creating educational and recreational programs for Ghanaian youth new to Canada. In 2008, he co-founded the non-profit organization Connecting Paths Canada, which helps to develop a sense of belonging among the Ghanaian Canadian community and strives to meet the needs of its youth.

Now a program director with the organization, Joseph Boachie has been able to put his ideas for positive action to work with the creation, in 2009, of the Ghanaian Canadian Soccer League. Why a soccer league? There’s no better place to combine physical activity and social integration! This Cascader also implemented the individualized program called “Ready-to-Learn.” Free of charge, the program provides young people with the resources they need to succeed in school. So far, approximately 60 children are using the service.

This is merely a brief glimpse of our good Samaritan; it doesn’t stop there! Joseph recently ran a half marathon as part of a team of Cascaders in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon to raise money for Autism Speaks Canada. The team was headed by Joseph’s co-worker Gene Rocha, who solicited the help of his colleagues to raise money for the organization. Gene Rocha, whose son has autism, cares deeply about this cause and has been extremely dedicated to it for many years.

Joseph has decided to give his “Socio-Hero” prize, a $1 000 cheque from Cascades, to Connecting Paths Canada. Cascades is very pleased to shine the spotlight on this employee’s remarkable community involvement, and would like to encourage him to continue his wonderful philanthropic work. Joseph Boachie is a shining example of kindness for us all, and Cascades knows how lucky it is to have him as a member of its large family.
