An Innovative Fruit Basket

Our team designed a fruit basket with a retractable handle made of cardboard.

The beginning of summer in Québec is synonymous with the arrival of a variety of small fruits that will delight young people and old people throughout the summer season. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries…. what a joy to sample the variety of in-season fruit provided by our local producers!

These small fruits are usually available in a cardboard basket with a plastic or wooden handle to facilitate transport. This handle is very practical, but it requires an additional assembly operation for market gardeners.  Moreover, once they are assembled, the baskets take a lot of storage space, which is not optimal for market gardeners who mass produce for only a few months!

Improving an Existing Product

From the perspective of innovation and product improvement, a Norampac employee, a division of Cascades, designed a fruit basket with a retractable handle made of corrugated cardboard, in order to eliminate all assembly operations for our clients. This basket is manufactured in one single piece! The handle is part of the rest of the structure and is inserted inside, therefore taking less space when storing. Without wood or plastic, the basket is 100% recyclable at the end of its life.

This basket is available in sizes of 1 liter or more and can be used not only for strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, but also for apples, pears, plums….in short, for all the delicacies that the season provides!

This packaging is proof that a small difference in design can have a great impact on assembly time for market gardeners, which translates into savings and increased profitability. Innovation is key and it is because of it that we can evolve and continually improve to make our daily life easier.

Do you know other products that were the focus of an innovation that helped improve their efficiency?
