Stop the Waste! How to be eco-friendly even when dining out

More than 8 out of 10 restaurant-goers would be willing to pay more to dine at “green” restaurants.

Did you know that the average North American consumes 2 200 napkins a year? That amounts to six napkins per day, maybe even more considering that the Canadian Food and Service Association lists 81 000 restaurants in Canada, and the NPD in the United States has counted 616 008! What if we were to cut back, even by a little bit? Estimates suggest that if everyone were to use one less napkin per day, more than a billion pounds of napkins could be saved from entering landfills each year.

With summertime coming, most people are getting ready to dine out – going to food trucks over lunch, sitting at sidewalk cafes and enjoying restaurant patios. Are most people conscious about being green when they’re eating out? According to a recent study by Ohio State University, yes – they are.

The 2010 study found that more than 8 out of 10 restaurant-goers surveyed in the Columbus metro area would be willing to pay more to dine at “green” restaurants. Seventy percent of respondents said they also believed it was good for restaurants to protect the environment. However, the study’s authors noted that few restaurants tend to market themselves as “green” or environmentally preferable, despite customers being intrigued by the idea.

Have you ever found yourself trying to wrestle a napkin out of its dispensers? To address this problem, we created the Cascades ServOne, a one-at-a-time interfolded napkin dispensing system that helps control the quantity of napkins that customers use. Cascades’ ServOne system helps restaurant owners cut down on waste and reduce costs by up to 25% compared to traditional dispenser napkins. The Cascades ServOne one-at-a-time dispensing system minimizes cross-contamination, since you touch only the napkin you pick, not the dispenser. In addition, the Cascades ServOne interfold napkins are environmentally preferable, made from 100% recycled fibres and certified Processed Chlorine Free, Green Seal and Ecologo.
